It is amazing how many people are “informal carers” – recently I saw the information on the Australian Institute of Health and Wealth website:
In 2011/12 there were 2.7 million carers and of those 700,000 were permanent carers.
Which means 2 million Australians are informal carers – that is those who class themselves as carers and these figures are from 2011/12.
I am sure there are many more now.
An Ageing workforce caring for an ageing population.
Just when you thought your caring responsibilities were over and the kids were on their own journey you are now caring for your aged loved ones.
Your caring has stepped up and you are now taking time off work for doctor’s appointments, helping out before and after work, meals and hygiene. It is really tough.
How do you balance everything?
How do you meet your responsibilities for the family and for your employer?
It is one of the challenges employers need to address.
According to the latest “state of the service” survey from the Australian Public Service Commission the rate of unplanned absenteeism has increased by 0.4% and I can easily correlate these unplanned absenteeism to the added family responsibilities of an aging workforce caring for an aging population.
Providing support for employees is much cheaper than recruiting new staff. I’d like you to think about that for a moment….. not only is it a duty of care for employers it would really be a great community service to help out there staff that are doing it tough.
There are benefits for everyone and we all know that supported staff are more loyal.
Supporting employees makes sense actually I can’t see why employers wouldn’t provide support in their caring duties.
